Earth Day

Feature

April 22nd, 2024

There is no better time to give our plant a high-five and commit to an eco-friendly lifestyle than right now! Sustainable living doesn’t have to be daunting; it can be as easy as swapping out a few habits in our daily routines. Our restaurants and retailers at Grasslands are doing their part to be community leaders in this lifestyle. Let’s follow their lead: sprinkle some green magic into your life and watch our planet smile back at us.

Check out the sustainable programs and practices our retailers have adopted:

Bulk Barn

More refills, less landfills! Bulk Barn aims to spread the joy of sustainability to their customers by keeping things green and easy. In 2016, they launched their Reusable Container Program, giving shoppers the chance to make more eco-friendly choices when it comes to purchasing bulk goods. The simple clean-at-home, weigh, scoop, and pay system makes shopping with reusable containers and bags at Bulk Barn an easy choice. Want to know what’s even better? Sustainable Sundays! When you use your reusable containers and bags on Sundays at Bulk Barn, you can get 15% off your purchase. It’s a no-brainer!

Chatters Hair Salons

We all know the hair industry creates a mountain of waste every day – 421,206 lbs to be specific. Chatters took one look, said “hard pass”, and opted to start a proud partnership with Green Circle Salons in 2017! All about that eco-friendly life, Chatters has become the biggest Green Circle Certified Salon Chain on the market. They scoop up everything from hair clippings to metals, gloves, hair colour, plastics, and even PPE gear like masks and face shields, and divert 95% of this waste from landfills. That’s 209,280 lbs of beauty waste diverted and counting!

Chatters also empowers their customers and clientele to “Style Consciously” by making mindful beauty choices that positively impact your health, lifestyle and environment. They have selected a range of products that get you those cleaner, greener, and kinder results. Style Consciously helps you identify the products you love that are clean, cruelty-free, vegan, or sustainable so that you can make the best choice for you and the environment!

Dr. Phone Fix

In a world consumed by the latest and greatest tech, Dr. Phone Fix is here to flip the script and give your electronics a new lease on life. Recognizing the importance of saying goodbye to throwaway culture and rescuing devices from a dreaded landfill fate, Dr. Phone Fix’s commitment to sustainability is woven directly into its business model. They’ve already found new homes for more than 15,000 pre-owned phones – that’s enough to fill 12 school buses! Every repair they do isn’t just about fixing devices; it’s about reducing waste and getting tech back into the hands of their customers. By giving gadgets a second chance, they’re not only saving you money, but also doing their part to protect the planet we love. That’s what we’d call a charge worth plugging into!

On top of that, once electronic components have reached the end of their life span, Dr. Phone Fix sends what can be recycled off to Call2Recycle. This match made in eco-heaven makes responsible recycling for shoppers as easy as trading in your phone for cash at Dr. Phone Fix! Electronic waste management sparks a revolution in how we handle our gadgets; every byte counts, and the actions we take today are a step towards a greener, cleaner planet.

Farmer Jane Cannabis Co.

Shaping a brighter tomorrow through our actions today is especially important in industries where responsible practices matter most. Farmer Jane offers an innovative and collaborative recycling program in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba, set to repurpose waste into reusable products. It’s not just about recycling – it’s about creating a vibrant, circular economy right in our backyards. Doing their part helps keep our communities clean and green, and also fuels the growth of local green businesses.

In the spirit of giving back, this Earth Month, Farmer Jane has announced a partnership with veritree with an ambitious goal to plant 10,000 trees by April 2025. To kick things off, 10 trees will be planted for every one of their employees – that’s a grand total of 1,250 trees set to root in the beautiful Cariboo Region of BC, helping heal the scars left by devastating fires that ravaged over 1.3 million hectares of land. The 10,000 trees planted will rejuvenate 4 hectares of precious ecosystems, lock away 10,800 tonnes of CO2, and provide a whopping 40 work days for tree planters, all contributing to a greener and healthier planet.

Leopold’s Tavern

Our friends at Leopold’s Tavern recognize the importance of acknowledging our impact and setting a plan to make a positive one. In the restaurant industry, natural resource consumption and the environmental impact of packaging for take-out and delivery are things that can be adjusted to help minimize the environmental footprint every step of the way. To take action and be part of the change they want to see, in 2022, Leopold’s proudly teamed up with veritree to contribute to planting more trees in Canada. Together, they have already planted 30,000 trees – and they’re just getting started! As of October 2023, every Poutine of the Week sold at Leopold’s is doing double duty – satisfying your cravings and contributing to plating even more trees across Canada.

McDonald’s

Serving up a better tomorrow is something that just feels natural to McDonald’s. Starting out with eliminating certain single-use plastics in 2021, like plastic cutlery, stir sticks and straws, McDonald’s has already eliminated approximately 700 tonnes of plastics from the Canadian system annually. McDonald’s has also pledged to three major changes by 2025: utilize renewable or recyclable guest packaging, source 100% Canadian cage-free eggs, and reduce virgin fossil-fuel-based plastics used in Happy Meal toys. Their major long-term goal for 2050 is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, for which they’ve already gotten a head-start: in 2018, McDonald’s became the first restaurant company to set approved, science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, paving the way for other restaurants to follow!

The McDonald’s Grasslands location also takes pride in making a difference right in our very own backyard. Every single day, you’ll catch their employees performing a daily garbage pickup within a 1-block radius of the restaurant, ensuring the neighbourhood is sparkling clean. On top of that, they also do a big community cleanup day quarterly where they venture further out into our vibrant neighbourhood to help tidy up. While these actions may seem small, they make a real difference in encouraging a greener lifestyle in our community.

The Chopped Leaf

Committing to the small things can have a huge impact. Every day is recycling day at The Chopped Leaf; they aren’t just tossing out the trash, they’re helping reduce the amount of waste headed to our landfills, and conserving valuable natural resources by giving materials a new lease on life. This daily recycling positively impacts our community by reducing pollution, conserving energy, and preserving the environment for future generations to enjoy. On top of that, their eco-friendly packaging for take-out and delivery of your favourite crunchy salads and mouthwatering wraps helps leave behind a positive impact on the planet!

Sustainability isn’t just a trend – it’s a beacon of light to a better future! The restaurants and retailers in Grasslands are working hard to weave eco-friendly practices into the fabric of their business practices. It’s more than just selling products; it’s about shaping a brighter, greener future for generations to come, and empowering shoppers like you to make greener choices. Every choice you make as a shopper has a ripple effect that reaches far beyond your backyard. When you shop sustainably, you’re doing so much more than just making a purchase – you’re investing in a world where beauty, joy, and responsibility go hand in hand.
